Telegraph of Time
As the last rays of sun in 2020 go down beyond the horizon, laser beams will light up the Helsinki sky, transmitting “2020–2021” in Morse code in all directions from the Olympic Stadium tower.
The Morse message display will be seen in the city sky and will be audible on analogue radio frequency 105.8 MHz. The audience will also be able to share their New Year’s messages and wishes on the radio programme through this website. What are your dreams for 2021? Who would you like to send a New Year’s telegram to? The messages will read on the radio by a mechanical voice and some of them will be featured on this website in text format.
The Olympic Stadium tower will turn into a kind of modern telegraph for the New Year’s night to send messages about the change of year. It will be a message about the passage of time across the Helsinki sky, and it will demonstrate the transition from the last night of the year to the first day of the new one.
The work can be viewed all evening, night and morning while it is dark, and you can choose a time and place that suits you for about 18 hours in total. It will be visible throughout the Helsinki area, especially from unobstructed places with a direct view of the Olympic Stadium tower. The work is not best viewed by the Stadium tower itself, instead it’s best to find your own viewing spot further away.
You can also experience the work and its audio track online via this website. The laser installation will also be featured on New Year’s TV broadcast on Yle TV1 and Areena.
Please note that weather conditions may affect the laser installation’s visibility. The radio laser work has been designed by Ilkka Paloniemi.
